Straight stitching for neat holly zipper pouch (Basic and classic zipper pouch tutorial) Diy pouch

How to make a zipper pouch using holly-patterned fabric. (Sewing a pouch bag with a zipper.) This is a handmade pouch where the combination of small holly motifs and a red zipper really stands out.

The pouch requires only a few steps to make, and the basic sewing technique is straight stitching. Sew the fabric and zipper together, stitch around the outer edge, turn it right side out, and it’s finished. The finished zipper pouch is perfect for use as a pencil case or for organizing small items.

This pouch can be made with a sewing machine that does straight stitching only, so it’s recommended even for those who have never attached a zipper or are just starting out with handmade projects. The finished size of this holly-patterned zipper pouch is approximately 12cm in height and 21cm in width.

Materials for the holly-patterned zipper pouch (Holly zipper bag making materials)

For the holly-patterned zipper pouch, you will need two pieces of outer fabric measuring 14cm × 23.5cm. (Seam allowances are included, and fusible interfacing is applied to the wrong side.)

Apply fusible interfacing to the outer fabric of the holly-patterned zipper pouch

Applying fusible interfacing gives the fabric more stiffness, helping the zipper pouch (zipper bag) keep its shape.

For the lining of the holly-patterned zipper pouch, you will need two pieces measuring 14cm × 23.5cm. (Seam allowances are included.)

Fold the ends of the zipper tape – the top tape end and bottom tape end – into triangles and stitch them in place. When making a zipper pouch (pouch bag), finishing the ends of the zipper can make sewing a bit easier. It also has the advantage of giving your handmade zipper pouch a neater appearance.

Sew the edge of the zipper tape with thread to finish it (Finish the end of the zipper by hand sewing)

Fold the ends of the zipper tape (the top tape end and bottom tape end) so that they do not extend into the seam allowance of the pouch (pouch bag). If the zipper ends overlap the seam allowance, it adds bulk, making sewing more difficult and affecting the finished appearance.
